ERIE — The Humboldt High Cubs swept both games in a double-header against Erie High with ease Tuesday afternoon.
The Cubs won the first contest 19-0, ending the game in the top of the fourth inning by mercy rule. The second contest was more of the same in Humboldt’s 23-0 romp.
“Our guys could have used the weather as an excuse to not play well, but they didn’t,” Head Coach Mike Miller said.
The Cubs started early in the first, bringing in six runs. Four scored in the second and nine in the third.
Humboldt waited until the second inning to take off in the nightcap with seven runs, followed by five in the third, one in the fourth and 10 in the fifth.
Austin Beeman pitched for the Cubs in the opener, allowing only three hits and garnering five strikeouts against the Red Devils. Grayson Pearish followed Beeman’s strong performance with his own, allowing only a single hit in the second contest, and striking out six.
“We got two excellent pitching performances from Grayson and Austin tonight,” Miller said in an email. “And our bats really came alive.”
Alive is right. The Cubs had 10 hits in the first, and 18 hits in the second contest. Nathan Whitcomb, Zach Vanatta and Pearish each had two hits, with Whitcomb pounding out a double and a home run. Pearish had a double as well. Whitcomb had three runs, along with Caleb Vanatta, Jacob Carpenter and Caleb D’Armond.
In the second game, Whitcomb had four hits and four runs, followed by Hunter Murrow with three hits and three runs and Pearish with three hits and runs. Carpenter smacked two doubles. Alex Murrow and Kason Siemens also doubled and Pearish had a triple.
Miller said his team didn’t allow poor conditions to affect their performance, and he was proud to see the way they stepped up.
“The conditions weren’t ideal but at least we got the games in,” Miller said. “I thought we did a really good job of battling through.”
