CHERRYVALE — The Humboldt Cubs ended Thursday’s triangular with a few fireworks as freshman Bentley Kolb, 215 lbs., picked up his first win.

After opening their dual against Three Rivers League rival Cherryvale empty-handed due to open weight classes and losses, Humboldt was able to leave Cherryvale on a high note after Kolb won a 25-21 decision.

“Coming back from Christmas, we’ve been practicing pretty hard this week,” Humboldt coach Kent Goodner said. “For Bentley, that was not only his first win, but his first varsity match.”

Otherwise, Humboldt had a rough night. Freshman Envy Oberbeck opened the final dual with an 11-4 loss to Cherryvale senior Koean Clotfelter with each of his points coming on escapes.

Emmitt Carson held his own against CHS junior Brogan Miller. Carson put a scare in Miller after nearly pinning him after reversing an attempted cradle with a head-hunter. Miller broke loose and later added a point with an escape to secure a 7-2 decision.
