FREDONIA — The Humboldt High basketball program traveled to Fredonia to take on the Yellowjackets.
In the girls game, the Lady Cubs lost, 50-47.
Coach Aubrey Jones’ squad jumped out to an early 18-9 lead heading into the second quarter. But that’s when the game began to shift in Yellowjackets’ favor.
Humboldt was down by 7 heading into the fourth and fought back to within 3. But even Makaylah McCall’s 13-point performance on the night was not enough to earn a victory.
Tilar Wells added 11 points for the Lady Cubs. Rylan Wilhite scored 9, Maggie Johnson scored 6, Annalise Whitcomb scored 4, and Aricah McCall and Lizzie Myers each had 2 points.
“We came out on fire and then definitely hit a big lull,” Jones said. “I really have to credit the kids though because they scrapped to get back in it.”
In the boys game, the Cubs also fell just short as they lost, 80-72.
Rayce Hoepker led Humboldt with 20 points on 6-of-15 shooting. Rhett Smith wasn’t far behind with his 16-point performance. Bryce Isaac was the team’s last double-digit scorer as he scored 10 points.
Corey Whitcomb finished the day with 9 points, Tyler Korte had 8 points, Anthony Doran had 5 points and Jake Haviland had 4 points.
“I was disappointed we lost, but I was very pleased with the way we played,” coach Dave Taylor said. “We played with high energy, handled their press effectively for the most part. We got into a little foul trouble which hurt us, but I felt the kids battled all four quarters, and we got better tonight in a loss, than we have in some of our wins that we have had.”
