HUMBOLDT — The Humboldt Middle School varsity girls team suffered a 46-21 loss at the hands of Cherryvale and Humboldt coach Scott Brady was not pleased with his team’s performance following Monday’s game.
“We have no toughness or ‘want to’ at all,” Brady said. “If we want to have a chance in our next couple games, we are going to have to change that.”
Brady gave credit to the Cherryvale squad for being a strong team, but was disappointed that his girls weren’t able to raise their games to that level and make it a tighter game.
“They are a very good team and a lot better than we are, but we didn’t come ready to play tonight,” Brady said.
The Cubs’ top-scoring duo of Isabelle Murrow and Maycie DeNoon led the team with five points each.
Madi White scored four points and Kirstyn Murrow added three points for the Cubs.
Jessica Myers and Zoey Wilson each had two points to round out the scoring.
JUNIOR VARSITY
The Cubs’ junior varsity bounced back with a lop-sided 26-14 victory over Cherryvale in the nightcap.
The second-half dominance by Humboldt was the story of the game as they entered halftime trailing 8-7, but got on track early in the second half thanks to eighth-grader Madi Riebel.
“This group just keeps winning,” Humboldt coach Scott Brady said. “They struggled the first half and were down, but Madi Riebel scored four points in about 30 seconds to start off the half and that gave us a big boost.”
Zoey Wilson led the Cubs with nine points and was also their star on the defensive end of the court with a team-high six steals.
Wilson helped the team close the game on a 9-0 run to seal the victory.
Anna Goforth added six points while Riebel finished with those four game-changing points.
Autumn Ballard had three points and Kirsten Kobold and Kennady Wilkerson each had two points for Humboldt.
The Cubs record improves to 8-1 this season.
C-TEAM
The Humboldt C-Team controlled its game with Cherryvale throughout and cruised to a 16-8 win.
“They led the entire game and did a good job of maintaining a six to eight point lead throughout,” Humboldt coach Scott Brady said.
Peyten Galloway led the Cubs with eight points and seven rebounds.
“Peyten played very well tonight and did some really good things on offense,” Brady said.
Rylee Wilson scored six points and Jailynn Goforth had two.
