SALINA — Humboldt’s Ryan Sellman capped his stellar freshman campaign in style by shooting an 86 in the 3A State Tournament in Salina.
“It was very cool, because some people never get to go to state and I had the privilege to go,” Sellman said.
Sellman went into the tournament outdoing what his brother Robbie Sellman did during his freshman year four years ago when he took 63rd.
The younger improved on that and then some by finishing in a tie for 37th place.
“I knew I just had to play my game and I would have a chance to beat his placement,” Sellman said.
Sellman said he is very happy with his overall season.
“I would describe it as a good season and I consider it a success,” he said.
Even so, Sellman said he is looking to improve in the offseason and have an even better year next season.
“I know what I have to improve on,” Sellman said. “I’m really motivated because I want to get back to state.”
Humboldt coach Eric Sparks is confident his young golfer will make the necessary improvements to have a big sophomore season.
“I’ve enjoyed coaching Ryan and seeing him progress throughout the season,” Sparks said. “I look forward to seeing what he can do in the next few years.”
Caney Valley’s Troy Watson won the tournament by shooting a 74. Fredonia was crowned as team champions.
Central Heights senior Matt Percy tied for sixth with a 78. Percy is the son of Iola High School baseball coach Mark Percy.
Percy has committed to play next season at Hutchinson Community College.
