IHS tennis ace Toland wins gold

COFFEYVILLE — Kent Toland remained unbeaten in 2010 tennis action. The Iola High senior went 4-0 at Tuesday’s five-team tennis competition hosted by Coffeyville’s Field Kindly High School.
Toland netted an 8-0 win over Parker Robertson of Parsons then beat Max Manley of Coffeyville, 8-4. He defeated Clay Southern of Pittsburg 8-1 and Matt Stutt of Chanute 8-3.
Toland took the gold medal in the No. 1 singles division. The rest of the IHS Mustang tennis team had a rough outing.
In No. 2 singles, Michael Middleton lost 8-1 to Payton Hays, Parsons, and Brad Eastman, Coffeyville. He lost 8-3 to Jake Cloninger, Pittsburg and dropped an 8-0 decision to Jimmy Quinn, Chanute.
Iola’s No. 1 doubles team of Chase Vaughn and Alec Peterson went 0-4 also. They lost 8-0 to Parsons’ R. Nus and JP Hurley, to Coffeyville’s T. Eastman and Z. Mitchell and to Chanute’s J. Cheshier and D. Manley. They lost 8-3 to Pittsburg’s R. Hall and M. Giffin.
Zeph Larney and Andrew Lowell played No. 2 doubles for Iola and lost four matches. They lost 8-2 to P. Jacqunert and A. Jack of Parsons and 8-1 to M. Mitchell and Q. Hershey of Coffeyville. They lost 8-3 to S. Perkins and K. Schwenker of Pittsburg and 8-4 to M. Johnson and J. Abduehal of Chanute.
Iola goes to Chanute on Friday.
