Iola Middle School’s seventh-grade girls were not gracious hosts Saturday.
The Ponies won both divisions of the 2011 IMS Pony Stampede basketball tournament. Iola rolled past Parsons to take the A-team championship at the middle school while the Iola B-team captured a 16-12 overtime win against Chanute’s Royster Middle School to take the B-team division title.
“Just a terrific effort from these kids all day long,” said Marty Taylor, IMS head basketball coach of the A-team.
The Pony A-team opened with a 29-21 win over Independence. Iola held Independence scoreless in the second quarter while tossing in eight points. The Ponies led 17-8 at halftime.
Sydney Wade dished out four assists, had four rebounds and scored 10 points to lead Iola. Riley Murry added eight points and six rebounds. Toni Macha pulled down 11 rebounds and scored six points.
Lexi Heslop scored three points and controlled four rebounds. Breckon Sutherland had two points.
Parsons beat Chanute’s Royster 25-14 to reach the championship game against Iola. Independence defeated Royster 22-20 in the third-place game.
Iola opened with a 6-1 run in the first quarter against Parsons in the title contest. It was 18-15 by halftime but the Ponies had another big push in third quarter, 16-8. Iola went on to a 42-29 victory.
“Syd was fantastic all day, Riley stepped up against Independence and played strong,” Taylor said. “Lexi and Toni did a great job inside against a bigger Parsons team — 25 points and 24 rebounds from your posts is tough to beat.”
Heslop tossed in 13 points and grabbed 16 rebounds and Macha had 12 points and eight rebounds. Wade scored 10 points and handed out seven assists. Murry had five points and eight rebounds and Alaynah Donovan had two points.
Taylor said Taylor Stout hustled all over the floor. He said Jadyn Sigg, Sutherland and Donovan gave the Ponies great minutes off the bench.
Iola’s A-team improved to 7-1.

The Pony B-team began the day with a 7-4 win over Independence with Macaiah Larney scoring five points and Kayla Underwood had two points.
Royster pushed past Parsons 21-17 to reach the championship game. Independence defeated Parsons 17-6 in the third-place game.
Larney fired in 12 points to lead the Ponies past Royster in the four-point overtime win to take the championship. Brook Storrer added three points and Della Lohman had one point.
“I’m very proud of these girls. Coach (Stacy) Sprague had five girls and they worked their tails off and won the tournament,” Taylor said.
Iola’s seventh-grade and eighth-grade teams play at home this afternoon against Columbus.
