Iola Middle School’s eighth-grade volleyball teams notched home victories Monday over Parsons Middle School.
The IMS seventh-grade A-team wasn’t as fortunate.
Iola’s eighth-grade B-team opened action with a 25-18, 22-25, 16-14 win. The Ponies held Parsons at 14 and served out the deciding game.
Shelby Smith served five aces while Trilby Bannister, Hannah Stout and Lauren Hunt each had three aces.
Emmalee Seabolt and Brianne Jett had two service aces each. Ashley Campbell served one ace. Elissa Murrow had one set assist and Baleigh Seeber downed a kill.
“We were down 14-10 in the third set and had the serve. Lauren Hung served six straight points for the win,” said Terri Carlin, IMS eighth-grade coach. “The girls really hung in there to pull out the win.”
Then came the seventh-grade A-team match. Parsons won 25-21, 25-8.
“There were several lead changes in the first game and we had some great digs and Mikaela Platt had a kill but it wasn’t enough,” said Muffy Fehr, IMS seventh-grade coach.
“In the second game, we struggled against their serve.”
Fehr said Taylor Heslop, Taylor Sell and Elise Wolf came up with digs in the first game.
The Pony eighth-grade A-team had a slow start, losing the first game. They bounced back taking the next two games to win the match 18-25, 25-14, 15-10.
“Torrie Lewis had a super serving night to give us a much needed boost in the second game,” Carlin said. “She served 12 straight points.
Morgan Wilson and Kim Kaufman were solid passers for the match.”
Lewis had seven ace serves plus four kills. Emma Piazza had six ace serve, one kill and one set assist. Kyra Moore downed four kills, had two assists and one ace serve.
Also for the A-team, Jo Lohman had three ace serves and a kill. Chelsea Lea had an ace serve. Emery Driskel had an assist and a kill.
