CHANUTE — Iola Middle School’s girls opened their basketball season Monday against host Royster Middle School’s Rockets in Chanute.
The Ponies’ only win came in seventh-grade B-team play. Iola beat Royster 17-16. Scoring four points each were Taylor Heslop, Makayli Cleaver, Treia Harvey and Hanna Ingle. Elisse Wolf added one point.
Iola’s seventh-grade A-team lost 28-6. The Ponies trailed 11-2 at halftime.
Makala Platt tossed in four points and had three rebounds for Iola. Taylor Sell scored two points and Heslop pulled down three rebounds.
“We had the first-game jitters about as bad as any team I’ve been around. Once we got settled the girls did a good job,” said Marty Taylor, IMS head coach.
The Pony eighth-grade A-team allowed Royster to get a 9-0 lead by the end of the first quarter. The Ponies weren’t able to dig out of the hole, losing 23-14.
“The girls played hard all four quarters and really competed and that’s a big step for this group,” Taylor said.
He said Jo Lohman and Emory Driskel gave the team a boost defensively. Katie Shields played well coming off the bench.
Lohman scored six points and had four rebounds. Emma Piazza had four points and two rebounds. Kyra Moore had two points and four rebounds while Shelby Reno scored two points and Driskel had two rebounds.
Royster defeated Iola 13-8 in the eighth-grade B-team game. Emmalee Seabolt had six points and Driskel had two points.
The IMS teams are back in action today at Pittsburg.
