INDEPENDENCE — Iola Middle School’s basketball teams continue to show improvement on the young season, head coach Marty Taylor said.
But the Ponies still lack the consistency needed to prevail on the scoreboard.
Iola’s A team trailed by two points after one quarter before host Independence erupted for a 27-1 run over the second and third quarters of a 39-8 victory.
The seventh-grade A team followed a similar pattern. The squads were knotted at 4-4 after one quarter before Independence outscored Iola 12-6 in the second quarter and 9-2 in the third of a 35-15 victory.
“The girls came out and really played well for the first nine or 10 minutes,” Taylor said of the A team contest. “Now we have to put 24 minutes together.”
Colbi Riley had six points and three rebounds, Karly McGuffin scored two points with six boards and Katie Bauer pulled down seven rebounds.
The seventh-grade A team was led by Mia Aronson and Kendra Sprague with four points each. Piper Moore, Madisyn Holloway and Charvelle Peterson each scored two. Chloe Hageman had one point.
“The girls are getting better,” Taylor said. “There are stretches we play really well. Now we have to string those stretches together.”
Independence brought home a 38-19 B team victory. Carly Cescon scored nine, Madison Carlin eight and Scout Rush two for the Ponies.
Mia Aronson scored all five of Iola’s points in the seventh-grade B team’s 12-5 loss.
Iola hosts Anderson County Monday.
