PITTSBURG — Iola Middle School began the 2012 golf season Monday at a tournament hosted by Pittsburg Community Middle School at Four Oaks Golf Course.
The IMS squad took fourth in the eight-team field with a 194. Colby Works led the group with a 44 for the nine-hole event then Taylor Sell with a 47. Sell finished third in the girls’ division.
Mason Key shot a 51 and Garrett Wade carded a 52 to round out the team score. Mac Simpson finished with a 65 and Ryan Eyster had a 66.
In the girls’ division, Toni Macha of Iola took second with a 44, three strokes in back of winner Abby Funk of Chanute (41). Brook Storrer carded a 63 for Iola.
Coffeyville won the tournament with a team score of 144 followed by Chanute’s Royster at 155 and Pittsburg at 161.
“I was very impressed with how well our golfers did, especially after just two weeks of practice and a majority of them in their first competitive golf event,” said Stacey Crusinbery, Iola Middle School golf coach.
“None of our boys placed in the top 10. If they work hard to improve their short game and develop some more patience around the green, I believe they will be earning some medals this season.”
Today, the Pony golfers host their IMS Invitational at Allen County Country Club. The tournament starts at 3 o’clock.
