It didn’t matter if they used aluminum or wooden bats Tuesday night. Iola American Legion Post 15’s Indians had enough hits to sweep a doubleheader.
The Indians defeated Mound City 11-3 and 13-0, which only went three innings.
In the opener, Iola scored three runs in the first but Mound City tied it up in the second. That chased Indians’ starting pitcher Chris Heffern.
Heffern worked 1 2/3 innings and didn’t give up a hit. But he walked six and hit two batters and was charged with three runs.
Mason Coons got the win in relief. Coons held Mound City to one hit and no runs for 5 1/3 innings. He struck out five.
The Indians scored four runs in the third to take the lead for good, winning 11-3.
Using aluminum bats, the Indians had eight hits. Levi Ashmore cranked out two singles and a double and Jerrik Sigg had a single and a double. Ryan Latta doubled. Mark Bristol and Clint Heffern each had a base hit.
Switching to wooden bats in the second game, Iola had eight hits. That was more than enough as Clint Heffern threw a three-inning no-hitter for the Indians.
Clint Heffern walked three and struck out four in the 13-0 run-rule win. Iola pushed across four runs in the second then used a nine-run third to close it out.
Bristol had a three-run double in third plus had a single. Chris Heffern doubled twice and drove in two runs. Corey Taylor had two singles. Tyler Clubine and Aaron Barclay each had a single.
Iola hosts Garnett Thursday.
