The Iola High School Athletic Department recently unveiled a slew of summer activities meant to enhance the skills of area high school and youth athletes.
The Iola High School boys and girls basketball teams will host team camps throughout the week. The girls camp will run Tuesday and Thursday from 10 a.m. to noon, then from 1 to 3 p.m. and Wednesday from 9 to 11 a.m. Following the 9 to 11 a.m. Following the camp, the girls team will also take part in a summer league with games scheduled every Thursday.
The Iola boys basketball team also slated camp dates for Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday from 6 to 9 p.m. They will participate in a team camp in Joplin June 22 through June 26. Along with summer camps, the boys basketball team will compete in jamborees at Pittsburg State June 5 and 6, then host a jamboree June 12 and head to Parsons for a June 12 jamboree.
Summer programs kick off June 9 with the summer strength and conditioning program. Spearheaded by Iola strength and conditioning coach Beau Foster, the program runs in two sessions Monday through Thursday. Catered to athletes freshman through senior year, the sessions will run from 6 to 7:30 a.m. and from 7:30 to 8:50 a.m.
Running concurrently with the summer weights program will be the Iola Mustangs football team camp. With dates slated for June 9, 11, 16 and 18, those interested in competing on the gridiron this fall are strongly encouraged to attend with times running from 6:30 to 8 p.m. at Riverside Park. Players who attend 80 percent of the camp dates will be eligible to travel with the team later this summer to attend the Kansas City Chiefs training camp.
The IHS volleyball team will host a team camp June 23 through June 26 from 10 a.m. to noon. The cross country team will meet for runs throughout the summer 8 a.m. Monday, Tuesday and Thursday June 30 through July 31 at Riverside Park, as well as an alumni walk and 5K July 19 at 8 a.m. The softball team will participate in the Chanute Summer League every Wednesday in June with the exact times of the doubleheaders to be announced at a later date.
Hot off making history last February, the IHS wrestling team will host open mats June 2, 9, 16 and 30, as well as open mats July 7, 14 and 28, then August 3 and 10. The Mustangs will host a team camp June 28.
