Another game, another win.
Iola High’s Fillies won their fifth straight after beating Osawatomie 51-19 Tuesday night.
Although by game’s end the point spread was double-digits, it wasn’t the strongest of starts for the Fillies. Iola dominated the offensive glass, but couldn’t get anything to fall. It seemed like for every shot in the paint, multiple attempts were needed until the ball dropped into the hoop.
“We had only four turnovers and had 42 rebounds. We took good shots, but they just wouldn’t fall early,” coach Becky Carlson said. “That’s a good win. Sometimes, if you look past a team, you could throw the ball away a lot and we didn’t do anything like that. We took good shots, we were just rushing a little bit.”
Sydney Wade helped Iola get off to a 9-2 lead after the first quarter. She hit two 3-pointers. Toni Macha scored underneath and Addie Haar made a free throw for Iola’s other points.
Haar dominated after the first quarter, scoring 16 of her 17 points the rest of the way.
With 4:55 left in the first half, Iola led 12-7. Emery Driskel then scored underneath and was fouled — making the free throw for the three-point play. She then scored via the same exact play on Iola’s next possession, but didn’t hit the foul shot. The Fillies ended the half on a 9-1 run to take a 21-8 lead at halftime.
Iola held the Trojans in check in the second half, holding them to 11 points. The Fillies’ defense kept Osawatomie in the single digits in each quarter, giving up six points in the second and fourth quarters.
Emma Piazza scored five points to lead all scorers in the third quarter. Haar added three and Macha scored four.
Haar took over in the fourth quarter, scoring 10. The Fillies were able to earn the running clock after getting their 30-point lead.
Iola (12-6) will travel to Wellsville next Tuesday.
The Fillies won the last contest 49-37 on Jan. 16. Iola needed a 14-0 run in the fourth quarter to get the win.
“I’m hoping to get a win,” Carlson said. “We just need to play like we have been. We need to keep our composure and go get them from the start.”

EARLIER, THE JV Fillies won 32-4. McKayli Cleaver led the team with seven points and Taylor Sell followed with six. Riley Murray added five, Colbi Riley scored four and Sarah Gonzales added three. Toni Macha, Della Lohman and Jayden Sigg each scored two. Ashlie Shields added a free throw.

THE FRESHMEN FILLIES won 39-11. Colbi Riley led the team with 12 points. Chloe Gardner scored six. Katie added five points. Karly McGuffin, Macayla Bycroft and Madison Gambill all scored four points. Carly Cescon and Olivia Taylor both scored two.
