From tip-off to the end of the first quarter, it looked like it was going to be another early blowout for the Iola girls.
Just like in their previous meeting with Burlington earlier this season, a big Wildcat run spelled doom for Iola. But unlike last December’s 65-20 loss, the Fillies were able to find their footing and fight back and ended up falling 41-24.
“Our goal is to just keep getting better,” head coach Becky Carlson said. “And I’d say we are. These girls have a lot of heart and they’re not going to give up. We just have girls who have great character.”
The Fillies fell behind 23-3 after the first quarter. Burlington pushed the lead to 25-3 before Iola seemed to find its footing and started to chip away, riding a 10-2 run to keep the Lady Cats from completely running away with the game.
“We were a little shy in the first quarter I would say,” Carlson said. “But once we figured out what to run and started attacking them at the run, we played with them. In the first quarter, our defense did a great job of stopping them but not a good job of rebounding. After that, we did a lot of good things.”
Iola trailed by 16 at the half and continued chipping away. The Fillies never got close enough to be a threat but they did end up winning the final three quarters by a score of 21-18.
None of the Fillies scored in double-digits. Senior point guard Colbi Riley had eight points in the loss.
With the loss, Iola slips to 4-10 and 2-4 in Pioneer League play.
The Fillies will try to rebound at Prairie View on Tuesday. Iola has beaten the Buffalos twice with the last time coming several weeks ago when they beat them by 12 in the Burlington Invitational.
Freshman Results
The freshman Fillies came away winners Friday night over Burlington to the tune of 30-29. They actually trailed 22-12 at the half and came all of the way back to win. Hannah Gardner and Becca Sprague each had eight points in the win.
