LA CYGNE — Iola High’s Mustangs kept their baseball record spotless on the 2013 season. TRENT LATTA got things going in the second game. He walked with one out, stole a base and advanced to third before Coons struck a sacrifice fly. ON MONDAY, Iola’s junior varsity also traveled to Prairie View for a doubleheader. The game was moved to La Cygne because of wet field conditions at Iola’s Riverside Park.
Playing their second doubleheader in two days, Iola rolled to wins of 7-3 and 9-5 over Prairie View High.
The victories lift Iola’s record to 8-0.
Perhaps most importantly, Iola has been able to win despite not playing at its best, Mustang coach Mark Percy said.
“We’re not there yet,” he said. “We have some things we need to improve.”
Iola led 2-0 after one inning and 5-0 after three in the opener.
Levi Ashmore singled and Mason Coons reached on an error before both players scored in the first.
Eric Heffern led off the third with a single. Ashmore followed with an RBI double, and Coons delivered a single to knock in Ashmore. Derrick Weir followed with a single before Aaron Barclay’s double scored Coons, making it 5-0.
The Buffalos scored all three runs in the fifth to close the gap before Iola struck again in the top of the sixth.
Cole Morrison reached on an error before Ashmore followed with a single. Coons delivered an RBI single for the final run.
Coons gave up three runs and five hits with six walks in five innings. He struck out six. Beasley pitched one scoreless inning, giving up two hits. Ashmore pitched an inning, giving up no hits with two strikeouts.
At the plate, Ashmore went 3-for-3 with a double, Coons singled twice, whlile Barclay had a double. Weir and Heffern had singles.
The first seven Iola batters reached base in the top of the third, starting with Heffern’s double. Latta had a run-scoring single, while Weir’s single scored two more.
The lead was 5-0 by the time Iola’s half of the inning ended.
Prairie View scored twice in the third and fifth innings, but not before Ashmore walked and scored in the fourth.
Tyler Clubine’s two-run double was the big blow in a three-run seventh for Iola to cap the scoring.
Latta started and went five innings, giving up seven hits and two walks with seven strikeouts.
Barclay pitched two innings, giving up two hits and a walk.
Latta went 3-for-3, while Clubine had two hits, including a double. Weir, Barclay and Heffern each had singles.
The teams split. Prairie View’s JV won the opener, 5-4, before the Mustangs rebounded to win the second game, 13-10.
Thealvin Minor pitched the opener, giving up three hits and three walks with four strikeouts. Collecting hits for Iola were Kohl Endicott, two singles, Keanan Badders, one single, Ethan Sigg, one single, and Brice Aiello, two singles.
Alex Bauer and Endicott pitched the second game, giving up a combined six hits with five strikeouts.
At the plate, Bauer singled twice, while Endicott and Brock Peters had singles.
