It was not the start they wanted in Jayhawk Eastern Division play. Allen County Community College’s Red Devils got beat in straight sets at home Wednesday.
The Red Devils were up 20-14 in the first set. Then momentum swung much like Kansas City, Kan., Community College’s hitters were all night — fast and hard.
After losing the six-point advantage, the Red Devils did not hold serve the rest of the set. The second set was much like the first; opportunities were there for the home team.
By the third set, Allen County seemed to have lost its confidence. The Red Devils did not serve for a point until they were down 14-8. They only had three service points in the game.
The KCKCC Blue Devils notched a 26-24, 25-22, 25-16 win over Allen County. The  loss dropped the Red Devils to 3-3 overall and 0-1 in conference play.
“It would have been a completely different match had we pulled off the first game win,” said Jessica Peters, ACCC head coach. “We needed to minimize the errors on our side. We gave them 23 of their points on the night. That is almost a whole set.”
Peters said the Red Devil players took a step back on aggressive serving. She said the game plan was to serve against the Blue Devils tough and get them out of their comfort zone.
“We didn’t do that. Our youth showed at times Wednesday. That hesitation on the decision to just take a ball still is present in our players,” Peters said.
“We are going to continue to work on taking what should be ours.”
Casey Droddy served five consecutive points to give ACCC the edge in the first set. She finished with seven service points and two aces. She also had 12 set assists and eight digs.
Erika Mack had three straight service points to tie  up the second set. She ended up with five points and one service ace. She also had 11 set assists and seven digs.
At the net, Nicole Rockhold racked up 12 kills and had a block assist. Makhala Giardina had seven kills, one solo block and one assisted block. Andrea Miller downed six kills and had a block assist.
Allison Jenicke made two solo blocks and one assisted block plus had three kills. Shelby Greenwood had one kill.
Rockhold served three points and Giardina served or two. Nicole Reed and Morgan Scott each had one service point.
Reed came up with 15 digs and Rockhold had 13 digs.
Allen County is home Saturday in a triangular. The Red Devils play Coffeyville at noon then Northeastern Oklahoma at 4 p.m.
