OSAWATOMIE — Iola’s fabulous freshman continued the dominating start to her high school career on Thursday during the Francis Wendt Invitational in Osawatomie.
Elysia Kunkler won the 100-meter dash, with a personal-best time of 12.99, and the 300-meter hurdles with a 51.57. She picked up second in her other two events with a 16.04 in the 100-meter high hurdles and a jump of 15’3” in the long jump.
Fellow-freshman Elka Billings had the next highest finish for the Fillies with a personal-best 6:02.09 in the 1,600-meter run to take third.
Madison Carlin took fourth in the high jump by clearing 4’6”.
Ella Taylor finished sixth in the 300-meter hurdles with a 59.1.
Junior Erin Klubek was sixth in the triple jump with a 26’3.75”.
In the junior varsity meet, the Fillies had two relays win with the 4×100 relay team of Taylor, Klubek, Carlin and Kylee Maloney running a 58.46 and the 4×400 team of Taylor, Klubek, Carlin and Billings running a 5:01.84.
MUSTANGS
Senior Chase Regehr was the headliner for the Mustangs with a season-best 2:08.53 in the 800-meter run to place second.
“This is the best time that he has run in two years,” Iola coach Dana Daugharthy said. “He is really coming on strong as the season progresses.”
Regehr picked up another second as a member of the 4×800 relay team with Cale Barnhart, Nathan Sprague and Bryce Andres. They finished with a 9:05, 15 seconds better than their previous best.
Sprague made the biggest improvement by cutting six seconds off his time and he continued that success with a season-best 54.34 in the 400-meter run to take fourth.
Junior Ethan Holloway took fourth in the high jump and senior Trea Williams had a season-best throw of 37’10” to place fourth in the shot put.
Tyler Gardner jumped 37’11.75” to finish fourth in the triple jump.
The 4×100 relay team of Barnhart, Gardner Jonathan Rodewald and Sprague took fifth with a 47.78.
The 4×400 relay team of Barnhart, Regehr, Rodewald and Sprague was fifth with a 3:53.88.
In the junior varsity competition, Iola’s 4×100 relay team of Pieter Venter, Holloway, Andres and Christian Jackson took fourth with a 52.68.

Iola with have junior varsity meets in Burlington on Tuesday and in Humboldt on Thursday. Their next varsity meet is Friday in Chanute.
