The Humboldt Lady Cubs season came to a sudden end following a 10-8 loss to the Prairie View Buffalos in the opening round of the regional tournament continued on Tuesday afternoon.
Humboldt’s rally fell a couple of runs short as the fourth-seeded Lady Cubs (17-9) faced off the fifth-seeded Buffalos (9-10).
Prairie View advances to face top-seeded Burlington (22-4), who opened the tournament with a 21-0 victory over Neodesha (2-21) also on Monday afternoon.
After opening the game in a 4-0 deficit, the Lady Cubs got on the scoreboard with an RBI single from senior pitcher Shelby Shaughnessy, who wrapped up her high school career with six strikeouts in the losing effort while allowing one walk and five earned runs.
Following an RBI single from sophomore third baseman Kamry De La Torre, the Lady Cubs pulled within a run of Prairie View when Shaughnessy reached home on an errant pitch.
Prairie View responded with three more runs in the second inning, but torrential rains roared through the area, delaying the game until Tuesday afternoon.
Despite facing a significant deficit, the Lady Cubs demonstrated they were not done just yet.
De La Torre opened the second day of action with an RBI single in the third inning. In the fifth, freshman designated hitter Addisyn Drake plated a runner on a ground-out, then sophomore outfielder Leah Carman pulled Humboldt within a run on a sacrifice fly.
That was as close to victory as Humboldt would get. The Buffalos poured on three unanswered runs in the sixth and seventh innings.
De La Torre once again gave Humboldt hope with an RBI sacrifice fly, then senior catcher Chanlynn Wrestler kept the rally going with a two-out RBI double, but victory was just out of reach after a groundout in the subsequent at-bat.
De La Torre led the team in RBIs with three. She also tied Shaughnessy for the team lead in hits with the pair each hitting in 3 of 4 at-bats.
With the loss, the Lady Cubs end the 2025 season 17-10 overall. Although losing skill position players Shaughnessy and Wrestler, Humboldt will return the majority of their 2025 roster next season.
