CHEROKEE — For two quarters, Marmaton Valley High’s boys were able to keep pace with their opponents from Southeast High of Cherokee.
But Southeast’s shooters picked up the pace in the second half, erupting for 18 points in the third quarter and 16 in the fourth of a 57-32 win.
In girls’ action, Riverton High erased any doubt early on, racing to a 21-7 after one quarter of what became a 56-22 win over Marmaton Valley.
The loss puts both Wildcat squads in seventh-place games today as part of the Southeast Lancer Classic. The girls will take on the loser of St. Paul and Southeast, who played each other Friday evening, at 2 p.m. in the west gymnasium. The boys follow in the same gym playing the loser of Friday’s Riverton-Frontenac at 3:30.
“The boys played hard and we played as a team tonight,” Wildcat head coach Denny Lasley said. “The score didn’t indicate how the game was played. They had some good shooters, and they moved the ball around. They shot lights out in the third and fourth quarters.”
Southeast led 12-8 after one quarter and 23-16 at the break.
Dalton Houk paced Marmaton Valley with 10 points and five steals. Zach Louk added seven points and four assists. Cole Becker and Nathan Smart each had six rebounds. Tanner Lewis had five steals.
Jake Thompson scored 17 points, Dalton Powell had 15 and Aaron Lake 14 to lead Southeast.
“IT’S THE SAME song and dance, just a different verse,” Marmaton Valley girls’ head coach Kent Houk said. “Turnovers killed us.”
Riverton utilized a full-court press to disrupt the Wildcat offense.
“It’s just a matter of our bodies going faster than our brains,” Houk said after Marmaton Valley committed more than 30 turnovers.
Riverton led 37-16 at halftime and 51-18 after three quarters.
Maggie Meiwes and Morgan Henry shared Marmaton Valley’s scoring honors with seven points apiece. Meiwes also had eight rebounds. Kailey Boyd had three assists and a steal.
Four Riverton players scored in double figures, led by Mattea Cup with 14. Amber Simmons, Koty Mallatt and Aubrey Dodge added 10 points apiece.
