Neither Burlington’s seventh nor eighth-grade football teams had enough in the tank to stop Iola’s win streak Thursday night as the middle school Ponies continued to reign supreme.

Iola’s seventh-graders held out for an 8-0 shutout and the eighth grade steamrolled to a 44-0 win.

The seventh grade moves to 5-1 overall and the eighth grade is 6-0. The eighth-grade Ponies’ shutout is their fifth straight and in the 24 total quarters played this season, 23 have been scoreless.

The lone touchdown for the seventh-grade Ponies came courtesy of Landon Weide from 5 yards out in the second quarter. Gage Turner made it into the end zone on the two-point conversion.

Meanwhile, the barrage of touchdowns started early for the eighth-grade thanks to two touchdowns in the first quarter. Holden Barker ran in the first and Jarret Herrmann the second. Barker had a successful two-point conversion on the first touchdown and quarterback Carter Hutton ran in the two-point conversion on the second.

Hutton struck in the second quarter twice. The first was an 11-yard pass to Herrman for a score and the second was a 36-yard scramble. Preston Hurst got the successful two-point conversion on the second touchdown which pushed Iola’s lead to 30-0 at halftime.

It slowed after that as Hutton connected with Kyler Mittelmeier from nine yards out in the third quarter to push the lead to 36. Hutton ran for another touchdown in the fourth followed by a Herrman two-point conversion which gave them the 44-0 advantage they held until game’s end.

“The boys stayed relentless from beginning to end,” head coach Scott Ellis said. “Credit goes to the whole group because team play is stressed. The boys are covering their jobs, doing their part, and making big plays offensively and defensively. I couldn’t be more pleased with our performance.”

The eighth grade will be going for a perfect season and the seventh-grade for near perfection next Thursday when they travel to Wellsville for their final game of the season.

Humboldt

The middle school Cub football team fell at home to Caney Valley 24-8.

Aiden Gean had the lone Cub touchdown. He ran for 111 yards on 21 carries. Dakota Slocum had two carries for 19 yards and Maddox Johnson had three carries for 14 yards and a two-point conversion.

Defensively, Gean had five tackles and Slocum and Johnson each had four. William Kobold scooped up a fumble.

“I thought we did some good things on both sides of the ball,” head coach Mike Miller said. “We limited turnovers and penalties on offense and on defense but we just lost contain on their quarterback a couple times which led to some big runs for touchdowns.”

Humboldt is 2-4 overall and will host Cherryvale next Thursday to wrap up their season.
