CHANUTE — Minor league baseball is coming to Chanute in 2020.

A deal was signed Wednesday between the city and the team’s owner, Titus Bond, to form a team within the M.I.N.K. League, which has roots dating back to the early 20th century.

The as-yet unnamed team will begin play next summer at Katy Stadium in Chanute’s Katy Park.

The squad will play a 45-game schedule, 23 at home.

The M.I.N.K League is a wooden bat collegiate summer league that features 9 teams from Iowa, Missouri and Kansas. In years past, the league has featured players such as Alex Gordon and Ozzie Smith, according to a press release from chanutebaseball.com.

To accommodate the new team, Katy Stadium will undergo several improvements, funded by Bond.

Seats will be added to the bleachers, including construction of “premier” seating areas. New fencing will be installed as well.

Fans are encouraged to visit www.chanutebaseball.com to take part in a team naming competition. The winning name will be selected in http://www.chanutebaseball.comNovember.
