INDEPENDENCE — It was cold and windy but the high school golfers did have a little sunshine Thursday afternoon at the Independence High Invitational golf tournament.
Iola High’s Mustangs finished eighth as a team with a combined 388 score. Independence won on its home course with a 326.
“Independence really played well but we had some bright spots also,” said Rick Horton, Mustang golf coach.
Horton pointed to Kris Collins, who started on the back nine and had a tough go shooting a 58.
“On the turn, I talked to Kris and got him to settle down. He came back and shot a 38,” Horton said. “Rocky Smith shot well and Weston Hines, our freshman, was just a shot behind those two guys.”
Collins and Smith both shot a 96, which tied them for 29th. Hines had a 97, with rounds of 47 and 50. Smith had rounds of 50 and 46.
Doug Stewart finished at 99 (47-52), as did Zach Crawford, 99 (49-50). Jarrett Mosbrucker shot a 106 (54-52).
“We have some work to do,” Horton said.
Top medalist was Pittsburg High’s Jon Nichols with a 75. His teammate Andrew Joy shot a 77. Pittsburg was second as a team with a 341.
Pittsburg-Colgan was third at 347 followed by Coffeyville 349, Chanute 372, Labette County 373, Parsons 380, Iola 388, Fort Scott 417 and Columbus 423.
Iola hosts a tournament Tuesday at Allen County Country Club. Tee time is 3 p.m.
