Mustang JV gains a split

CHANUTE — Iola High’s junior varsity baseball team had its ups and downs in Tuesday’s doubleheader at Chanute High.
The Mustangs pushed ahead of their hosts, 8-0 after two and a half innings. It was 8-4 after three frames.
Iola added five runs in the fourth on its way to a 13-4 win. Mason Coons went the distance on the mound, giving up seven hits and two walks. Coons struck out 10.
The Mustangs used a couple of doubles — one by Shelton Reno in the third and one by Trent Latta in the fourth — to produce runs. They also took full advantage of several walks issued by Chanute’s pitchers.
Latta also had two singles in the game. Coons hit three singles. Eric Heffern, Trey Wilson and Tyler Tomlinson had two base hits each. Derrick Weir an John Whitworth had a single apiece.
In the second game, the downside came for Iola.
“We played pretty well defensively in the first game. Not so in the second game,” said Mark Percy, Mustang head coach.
Chanute won the game 10-4. Iola scored two runs each in the first and fourth innings.
Weir had a single and a double and Reno hit two singles. Heffern doubled. Tyler Clubine and Whitworth each had a single.
Reno pitched 21⁄3 innings, allowing seven runs on two hits, three walks and a hit batter. He struck out three. Latta threw 12⁄3 innings and gave up three runs on five hits and one walk. He struck out five.
The Mustang JV play at Independence Thursday.
