Mustang wrestlers pull medals from K.C. Piper tourney

PIPER —  Iola High’s Mustangs saw new competition on the wrestling mat Saturday. The Mustangs finished ninth, with 48 points, in the 14-team Piper Wrestling Invitational.
“There were some bright spots during this tournament,” said Ron Schomaker, Mustang head coach. “Some of our guys wrestled really well.
“There was some good competition and it was nice seeing some different schools that we haven’t wrestled before.”
Royal Valley won the team title with 156 points. Jefferson West was second at 138 and Ottawa placed third at 135. Sam Houston, a high school from Texas, was sixth.
Iola junior Marcus Sullivan made it to the championship match of the 160-pound class. Sullivan defeated Ryan Schademan of Piper 19-7 and Jacob Burten of Mill Valley 6-4.
In the title match, Elias Parenti of Ottawa pinned Sullivan. Sullivan earned the silver medal.
Chris Lynn, a junior, pinned Juan Martinez of Sam Houston to capture third place in the 285-pound class. Lynn pinned Eli Walrod of Jayhawk-Linn to start the day.
Lynn lost to eventual champion Robert Retzer of Ottawa by a fall. He came back to pin Aaron Traxler of Royal Valley to get to the third-place match.
Freshman Stephen McDonald made it to the third-place match of the 189-pound class. He lost 7-4 to Tory Boudreaux of Mill Valley and took the fourth-place medal.
McDonald pinned Julian Moore of Piper in his first match of the day. He was pinned by Chris Tackett, who won the gold medal, of Sam Houston. McDonald pinned Alex Martinez of Wyandotte.
Junior Lee Berg went 2-3 and placed sixth in the 135-pound class. He lost to Javon Cart of Sam Houston 6-4 then had back-to-back wins.
Berg pinned Mike Hack of Ottawa and beat Taylor Jenkins of Jayhawk-Linn 15-1. Berg was pinned by Cory Pruyser of Royal Valley then faced Carter again to lose by a fall.
In the 130-pound division, sophomore Brent Clark was pinned by Zack Roybal of Royal Valley. He pinned Alex Lor of Schlagle then was pinned by Jorge Barajas of Kansas City Ward.
Devin Culler, a sophomore, was pinned by Capp Wood of Jefferson West and lost 12-5 to Alex Tucker of Ottawa in the 152-pound class.
Junior Drew Shepherd was pinned by Frederick Avery of Schlagle and Jake Bevans of Parsons in the 171-pound class.
Iola wrestles this Saturday in the Fredonia High Invitational.
