Not only did the high school golfers have to read the course at Allen County Country Club Tuesday, they had to learn to play the wind. Strong winds affected the flight and roll of golf balls throughout Iola High’s invitational tournament.
The Mustangs ended up fourth with a team score of 379. Independence won the 18-hole tournament with a 331 led by Levi Leiker who finished second overall with an 80.
Pittsburg High’s Jon Nichols was top medalist, winning the event by eight strokes, with a 72. Independence’s Peyton Botts and Garrett Webster were third and fourth at 81 and 84, respectively.
Pittsburg was second as a team with a 350 and Parsons was third with a 357. Columbus was fifth with a 393 followed by Fort Scott at 296, Chanute at 402, Labette County at 406 and Iola B at 420.
Iola’s “A” team was paced by Jarrett Mosbrucker with rounds of 48 and 45 for a 93. That put him in a tie for 18th place. Doug Stewart shot a 94 (46-48) and Kris Collins carded a 95 (48-47).
Rocky Smith shot a 97 (50-47) and Zach Crawford finished with a 99 (48-51). Weston Hines ended up at 101 (47-54).
The top performance of the day for Iola was turned in by Nick Jacobs on the Iola “B” team. Jacobs came in at 92 (49-43). Jacobs tied for 14th.
Other scores of Iola were: Sam Shallah, 105 (56-49); Hayden Wolf, 106 (52-54); Lee Berg, 117 (60-57); John Hutton, 117 (60-57); Dean Headley, 117 (62-55); Paul Spect, 118 (62-56).
Finishing out the top 10 individudals for the tournament, Pittsburg’s Andrew Joy was fifth, 85; Independence’s Logan Taylor was sixth at 86, Parsons’ Dalton Hoose and Brock Borovetz were seventh and eighth with 88 and 89, respectively. Independence’s Tanner Goad was ninth with an 89 and Columbus’ Derek Wilson shot an 89 for 10th.
The Mustang varsity goes to Pittsburg next Tuesday for a Southeast Kansas League designated tournament.
