Blue Comets edge out Mustangs in IHS Buck Quincy Invitational

One shot. That’s all that separated the top two teams at Tuesday’s 2011 Iola High Buck Quincy Invitational.
Chanute High’s Blue Comets combined for a 351 on the Allen County Country Club Course. Iola High’s Mustangs put together a 352 on a cool, windy day on their home course.
“We played better as a team than we have been from top to bottom. It was good to see,” said Rick Horton, Mustang golf coach.
The Buck Quincy Invitational is traditionally played on a Monday morning. Kansas spring storms made Iola make a decision to postpone Monday’s tournament Sunday evening.
“We’ll play golf in the rain if there isn’t lightning but since we play our tournament in the morning, we had to make the decision that early,” Horton said.
“We were able to get on the country club course again Tuesday and got the tournament played. It was chilly and windy early but all the kids dealt with it  pretty well.”
One from Iola did particularly well. Freshman Weston Hines tied for the lowest score. Hines, Chanute’s Kyler Miner, Fort Scott’s Jonathan Allen and Yates Center High’s Paul Stockebrand each carded an 83 for the 18-hole tournament.
“One bad hole hurt Weston and on the tiebreaker he slipped to fourth place. But for a freshman, he played very well in a varsity tournament,” Horton said.
Independence finished third with a 360 total and Fort Scott was fourth at 373. Yates Center’s Wildcats took fifth with a 389 followed by Iola’s B-team at 400, Labette County at 402, Burlington at 412 and Parsons at 424.
Stockebrand was third with rounds of 42 and 41. Hines had rounds of 44 and 39. Only Hines and Allen of Fort Scott had rounds of 39 for the tournament.
Yates Center’s Jake Morrison ended up fifth with an 85 (44-41). Rylan Bauman shot a 91 (46-45) and Jaden Knoblock had a 130 (61-69). Also playing for the Wildcats, Nick Schomper shot a 134 (74-60).
“I was glad to get below 400 for a team score,” said Kevin Barnes, Yates Center golf coach. “I guess the boys are fair weather players. All of them but Jaden shot several strokes better their second nine when the weather warmed up and the wind died down, even though the holes played longer.”
Joining Hines in the top 10 for Iola were Kris Collins and Jarrett Mosbrucker. Both shot 88 for the tournament with Collins (46-42) taking seventh and Mosbrucker (43-45) finishing eighth.
Zach Crawford shot a 93 (49-44) and Nick Jacobs had a 94 (46-48). Also playing on the IHS varsity was Doug Stewart, who carded a 98 (49-49).
Iola’s B-team was led by Sam Shallah with a 94 (51-43) as Rocky Smith was one stroke back at 95 (48-47). Lee Berg finished at 105 (56-49) and Hayden Wolf had a 106 (52-54).
Others on the B-team were Paul Spect at 117 (60-57) and Dean Headley at 130 (66-64).
The Mustangs go to Parsons for the Labette County High tournament Thursday. Yates Center plays at Neodesha next Tuesday.
