Iola, Marmaton Valley, Crest, Yates Center
runners compete at Parsons meet

PARSONS —  Iola High’s Mustangs continue to run in the medals as the cross country season unfolds.
The Mustangs scored 58 points, tying with Chanute, Thursday and brought home the third-place team medals. Labette County won the Parsons High Invitational with 56 points.
There were 18 schools competing under nice weather but on a wet course at Big Hill Reservoir Thursday.
Crest, Marmaton Valley and Yates Center competed  as well as Humboldt. The Register did not receive a report from Humboldt by today’s deadline.
In the varsity boys’ 5K race, Roman Yocham led the Mustangs with a second-place finish. Yocham ran the race in 17 minutes, 49 seconds.
Trent Latta earned the 11th-place medal in 19:16. Christian Kauth was 19th in 19:54 and Tyler Powelson took 25th in 20:11. Also for Iola, Bryan Miller was 29th in 20:23 and Dylan Lower finished in 37th place at 20:52.
“The course had a sharp left turn and was very narrow after 100 yards. It was a sprint to get to the turn but we got through the bottleneck very well,” said Marvin Smith, Iola head coach.
Dustin Davis-Jones of Crest claimed the seventh-place medal in 18:26. It was Davis-Jones’ best race of the year.
Marmaton Valley’s Zach Louk took the eighth-place medal in the varsity race. Louk’s time was 18:35.
Yates Center’s Paul Stockebrand was 45h in 21:39. YCHS coach Kevin Barnes said Stockebrand had been running in the mid 20s position then took a spill going through a  waterway that cost him time and places.
Iola High’s Fillies finished fifth as a team in the varsity girls’ 4K race. Chanute won it with 27 points and Iola had 108 points.
The lone medal winner for Iola was Sydney Owens, taking 12th in 18:52. Leah Weir ran 33rd in 21:34.
Abby Works, Briann Burris and Jamie Spears finished 35-36-37. Works’ time was 21:57 followed by Burris in 22:09 and Spears in 22:39.
“Sydney had a good race. Leah ran ahead of Sydney for a portion of the race but struggled during the final mile,” Smith said. “This was Briann’s first varsity race.”
Crest High’s Italy Loving captured the 14th-place medal in 19:04. Addie Rhea placed 25th in 21:01.
In the girls’ junior varsity race, Marmaton Valley’s Ashtynn Louk earned the fourth-place medal in 20:05. Crest’s Brittany Belosic showed improvement by two and a half minutes, according to Crest coach Tisha Hug, as she placed 26th in 24:23.
Iola’s Jordan Dillingham was 21st in 23:19 with teammates Jennica Rausch in 30th, 24:53, and Chalene Hutton in 34th, 26:03.
Iola’s Mustangs won the junior varsity boys’ team title with 55 points. Crest was second with 105 and Marmaton Valley was fourth with 113 points.
Marmaton Valley’s Ryan Smith won the top medal in the 4K race in 15:28. Also taking a medal was Carlos Gonzales in 12th at 16:44. Marcus Miller was 24th in 17:20, Chance Stevenson was 39th in 18:24 and Seth Cuppy was 78th in 21:08.
Iola was led by Jordan Strickler’s third-place finish in 15:55. Michael Armstrong was eighth in 16:28. Josh Klubek picked up the 10th-place medal in 16:38. Michael Wilson was 20th in 17:15.
Others placing for Iola were: 25. Jeremy Spears, 17:22, 37. Bryan Mueller, 18:12, 41. Arion Kunkler, 18:27, 42. Matthew Cunningham, 18:31, 49. Jason Tidd, 18:55, 61. Drew Smith, 19:37, 69. Levi Baker, 20:14, 76. Cody Conner, 20:47.
Yates Center’s Sam Aguirre was 48th in 18:55.
“The boys’ field was packed and I think we had a great showing for a small school,” Hug said. The Crest boys took three medal spots, all in the top 10, of the junior varsity race.
Crest’s Trevor Holman placed fourth in 16:07 followed by Chris Brallier in fifth at 16:20. David Womelsdorf was ninth in 16:27.
Also for Crest, Jory Ramsey was 59th in 19:28 and Craig Brallier was 63rd in 14:40.
Yates Center, Marmaton Valley, Crest and Humboldt will be at Iola High’s annual Doc Stiles Invitational Tuesday at Riverside Park. Races start at 4 p.m.
