LACYGNE — It was a mighty long, dreary afternoon to play one inning of baseball.

Iola High’s Mustangs wrapped up play in their Pioneer League Tournament semifinal game against host Prairie View in a game suspended from Thursday because of rain.

“I wish we could’ve put on a better show,” Iola head coach Mark Percy said of Iola’s 13-3 defeat.

The game was suspended in the bottom of the fourth with Prairie View leading 12-3.

A missed chance at a double play loomed large as the Buffalos plated a run to increase the lead to 10. The Mustangs went down in order in the top of the fifth, ending the game via Kansas’ 10-run mercy rule.

Walks and errors killed Iola’s chances, Percy noted.

On Thursday, a leadoff error and a two-out walk paved the way for seven Prairie View runs, breaking open what had been a 5-3 contest.

“We didn’t play very well,” Percy said.

Drew Faulhaber took the loss, giving up six hits and four walks with three strikeouts. Derrick Weir gave up five hits and a walk. Thealvin Minor pitched one-third of an inning, allowing one hit.

Weir’s solo home run headlined the Mustang offense. Coleson Wiggin and Ethan Scheibmeir each singled twice. Ethan Sigg doubled. Faulhaber added a single.

Iola plays Osawatomie this afternoon in the third-place game. The game originally was scheduled for Monday, but was called off as rains arrived shortly before first pitch.

Because the tournament was pushed back a day, today’s junior varsity baseball game against Wellsville has been canceled.
