Mustangs play in SEK tournament

CHANUTE — Iola High’s Garrett Catron and Zeph Larney finished sixth in their respective singles division at Thursday’s 2011 Southeast Kansas League tennis tournament.
The Mustang doubles teams were eighth and ninth, respectively.
Catron, playing in the No. 1 singles division, had one win, 8-5 over Coffeyville’s Brad Eastman. He lost 8-2 to Parsons Payton Hays, 8-0 to Fort Scott’s Ben Bristley and 8-4 to Pittsburg’s Michael Giffin.
In No. 2 singles, Larney defeated Dakota Lewis of Labette County 8-2. He dropped 8-4 decisions to Drew Rising of Coffeyville and Dillon Peet of Fort Scott. Then he lost 8-5 to Rising.
Iola’s No. 1 doubles team of Jordan Strickler and Andrew Lowell recorded an 8-3 win over Humble and Zwahlan of Columbus. They lost 8-0 to Grillot and Altic of Fort Scott, 8-1 to Coffeyville’s Mitchell and Hershey and 8-5 to Mathes and Traxson of Labette County.
Chris Michaels and Drew Smith, Iola’s No. 2 doubles team, lost their only match of the day. Labette County’s Bancwertz and Webster beat Iola’s duo 8-3.
The Mustangs have a week to prepare for the Kansas Class 4A  Substate Tournament at Independence.
