Mustangs’ Allen runs the table in Chanute

CHANUTE — Iola senior Rhett Allen has been hitting his stride as the high school tennis season rolls along and that continued through the Chanute Tournament on Tuesday.
Allen went undefeated in No. 2 singles competition, with an 8-0 victory over Fort Scott’s Xavier Watkins, an 8-6 win over El Dorado’s Adam Haines, an 8-2 win over Chanute’s Braden Robinson and a pair of default wins.
Isaiah Fawson went 3-2 with an 8-4 win over Fort Scott’s Jacob Bailey and two default wins.
The senior suffered losses to El Dorado’s Logan Stenseng (8-4) and Chanute’s Scout Lee (8-6).
Iola’s No. 1 doubles team of Jon Miller and Bret Plumlee went 2-2 with their final Chanute match being canceled due to weather.
After starting with losses to Fort Scott and El Dorado, they responded to beat Columbus, 8-7(0), and Labette County 8-7(4).
The No. 2 doubles team of Elijah Fawson and Jackson Cone played as a pairing for the first time this season and after they lost their first two matches to El Dorado and Fort Scott, they responded to knock off Labette County, 8-3, and Columbus, 8-4, before losing to Chanute, 8-1.
The Mustangs took third as a team.
The team goes back to Chanute for the regional tournament next Thursday.
