MV defense leads to win

Marmaton Valley High's defense held Northeast scoreless through the first quarter, as the Wildcats took home a 37-25 win Tuesday. The victory keeps MV in the upper echelon of their substate bracket.

MORAN — Another sterling defensive effort kept Marmaton Valley High’s girls in the win column Tuesday.

The Wildcats held visiting Northeast scoreless in the first quarter and allowed only six points in the first half of a 37-25 victory.

Payton Scharff put Marmaton Valley on top early, scoring six points in the first quarter and four more in the second.

The Wildcats led 7-0 after one period and 19-6 at the break. 

Northeast played evenly from there, but was not able to dent Marmaton Valley’s lead.

Scharff led the Wildcats with 12. Maria Forero chipped in with 10 and Janae Granere eight.

Brooklyn Jackson paced the Vikings with 14, with 11 in the fourth quarter.

Northeast’s junior varsity hit six 3-pointers in a 22-2 win over two quarters.

Andie Carr hit Marmaton Valley JV’s only field goal.

The Wildcats visit Altoona-Midway Friday.

With only a few games left in the regular season, the Wildcats remain locked in a tight battle for a top seed in the Class 1A-I Substate Playoffs.

Marmaton Valley stands in a tie for third in the Rosalia-Flinthills Substate, tied with Crest. Both sport 11-5 records. 

Olpe sits atop the standings at 13-3, followed by Madison/Hamilton at 13-4.
