ST. PAUL — A ferocious second-half comeback kept Marmaton Valley High’s girls alive to fight another day.
The Wildcats erased a 17-point deficit late to stun Cedar Vale, 54-49 in overtime, in the first round of the Class 1A-I Substate Tournament.
The victory puts Marmaton Valley (7-14) in the substate semifinals against second seed South Haven (16-4). Tipoff is at 6 p.m. Thursday at St. Paul High School. The winner advances to Saturday’s championship game, with a berth in the state tournament on the line.
Marmaton Valley couldn’t have picked a better time to play its best basketball of the season, head coach Gavin Cole said.
“We wore them down with our full-court, man-to-man defense,” Cole said. “I couldn’t be prouder of the girls.”
The Wildcats came all the way back from their seemingly insurmountable deficit with about 2 minutes left in regulation. The Lady Spartans misfired on their final shot, sending the game to overtime.
The Wildcats also executed well down the stretch, regardless of what defensive strategy Cedar Vale deployed, Cole said.
Mackenzie Tynon led the way for the victors with 25 points, although she was hardly the only stalwart. Kyla Drake added 10 points, Misty Storrer nine, Brooklyn Newman six and Magie Stevenson four.
Cole said he didn’t know much about Marmaton Valley’s upcoming opponent, “except they’re pretty good at both ends of the court.”
In other substate action, Burden-Central downed Chetopa, 60-44, to advance to take on top seed and host St. Paul (17-2) in the other semifinal contest at 7:30 p.m. Thursday.
