Humboldt High School standout Connor Newman will head to the state golf tournament after culminating a whirlwind freshman season with a regional title Tuesday in Caney Valley.
Newman edged Baxter Springs sophomore Cole Parish by a single stroke while completing the par 72 Brush Creek course in 73 strokes.
The state tournament is Tuesday, May 27, at the Buffalo Dunes Golf Course in Garden City.
Newman was the only Cub to qualify for state. The team finished sixth overall with 426 strokes. Newman opened the tournament shooting a 36 on the front nine holes, then fell a stroke back on the back nine to card a 73 for one over par.
Junior Layne Ellison was Humboldt’s next highest finisher after tying for 29th place. He shot a 57 on the front nine, then 56 on the back nine to card a 113. Just a few strokes back was sophomore Thatcher Mueller with a 117 for 31st place. Taking a step away from competing in track and field, Mueller opened with a 57 on the front nine, then wrapped up his season with a 60 on the back nine.
Humboldt senior Curt Shannon carded a 123 for 36th place. He shot a strong 59 on the front nine, then dropped back a few strokes with a 63 on the back nine.
