PITTSBURG — Humboldt sophomore Connor Newman earned a berth at the state tournament after taking the 2A Sub-State Tournament by two strokes Monday at Pittsburg’s Crestwood Country Club.
It was Newman’s second sub-state title in consecutive years.
Senior Layne Ellison was eight strokes from qualifying for state in his final run with the Cubs. He opened with a 55 on the front nine, then dramatically improved on the back by shooting a 49 and carding a 104 for 32 over par for a 21st-place finish.
Newman was one shot over par for the par 72 course. He shot a 37 on the front nine, then shaved a stroke on the back to shoot a 36 and card a 73.
Layne Ellison, Humboldt senior, puts during a tournament at the Allen County Country Club earlier this month. Ellison finished 21st at Monday’s sub-state tourney.
With Monday’s first-place medal, Newman is on a bit of a hot streak heading into Tuesday’s state tournament at the Quail Ridge Golf Course in Winfield.
He captured the Tri-Valley League title last week.
He slipped a bit while closing out April with a second-place finish at the Labette County Invitational, and a second-place finish at the Humboldt Invitational a week later.
Before that, Newman had won four consecutive tournament titles.
