Panthers jolt Red Devils

Allen County Community College’s Red Devils were battered around a bit in the cold wind on Monday. Visiting Neosho County Community College’s Panthers pounded out 18 hits in two games, sweeping the doubleheader.
The Panthers won 15-3 in five innings in the first game and took a 5-2 decision in the nine-inning contest. After winning the first of their first Jayhawk Eastern Division weekend four-game series, the Red Devils were stymied against the Panthers.
Allen County is 1-3 in Jayhawk East play and 3-7 overall. Neosho County is 3-1 and 7-5.
The Red Devils have a non-conference doubleheader at home Thursday against Central Christian’s junior varsity. The first game starts a 3 p.m. at Red Devil Field.
Allen County is back in Jayhawk East action Saturday and Sunday with a four-game series at Fort Scott Community College.
In Monday’s first game, the Panthers had a six-run second inning highlighted by a three-run home run by Adam Giacalone. Allen County came back to get two runs in the third.
With one out, Miles Sanderson drew a walk then Michael Schell singled. Brayden Brumley walked to load the bases. Riley Price’s sacrifice fly to left brought in a run. Curtiss Bunch delivered an RBI single.
But two ACCC  errors helped the Panthers score three runs in the fourth then three walks issued by Allen County pitchers and four hits resulted in six runs for NCCC in the fifth inning.
Allen County’s answer was a single run in the fifth. Schell doubled with one out. Price connected for a single with two gone then Bunch drove in a run with a base hit.
Schell had a single and a double in the game while Bunch hit two singles. Price had a base hit.
Kaleb Clark took the pitching loss. Clark started and worked four innings, allowing nine runs on six hits and three walks. He struck out seven. Tanner Wittman pitched one inning, giving up six runs on four hits and three walks with one strikeout.
Neosho County scored a run in the second inning of the second game. Allen County responded in kind.
Brad Alberts singled and moved to second on a sacrifice bunt by Bryce Williams. Schell’s double drove in the tying run.
The game stayed tied at 1-1 until the eighth inning. Again, Allen County pitchers gave up two walks and there was a Red Devil error that helped the Panther cause. The Panthers added two hits as they scored four runs.
Allen County scored a run in the bottom of the ninth. Alberts singled and scored on a one-out base hit by Schell. The Red Devils had two runners on with one out but couldn’t get another hit. The next two batters were retired to end the game.
Schell had two singles and a double. Brumley, Alberts and Travis Stafford each had two singles. Bunch doubled and Price singled.
Dylan Bowman was the ACCC starter and went seven innings. He gave up three runs on five hits and five walks plus struck out eight.
Zak Mickens took the loss in relief. Mickens pitched one inning and allowed two runs on three hits and one strikeout. Alberts pitched one inning.
