Three for three. Not bad for an afternoon’s work.
Iola Middle School’s Pony boys swept the visiting Parsons Middle School Vikings in three basketball games Monday.
In a combined B-team contest with both seventh- and eighth-grade players, Iola began the run with a 33-18 win. Matt Jacobs tossed in nine points to lead Iola and Brock Peters added eight.
Adam Peterson scored six points and Wyatt Hines had four. Scoring two points each were Tyler Holloway, Kalob Mock and Travis Hermstein.
“Brock did a nice job in the game,” said Marty Taylor, IMS head coach. “Coach (Cody) Hager has really brought these kids a long way.”
Next up was the seventh-grade A-team contest. The Ponies got out of the gate with a 12-8 halftime lead. They stretched their advantage with a 13-8 surge in the third quarter but had to fend off the Vikings in the fourth to win 28-23.
“A very good effort from these kids,” said Taylor, “They played hard and under control the whole game. Brice (Aiello) was very good from start to finish. He just works so hard and was the difference.”
Aiello fired in 15 points and pulled down nine rebounds. Brett Taylor had five points and five re bounds. Gus Hopkins also had five points plus controlled seven rebounds. Colby Works scored two points and Keanan Badders had one point.
Parsons raced to an early lead in the eighth-grade A-team game. The Ponies had to rally from a 9-4 first-quarter deficit. They outscored the Vikings 8-7 in the second period to trail 16-12 at intermission.
Iola turned the game around with a 14-10 run in the third quarter and finished it by outscoring Parsons 13-10 in the fourth quarter. The Ponies won 39-36.
“We didn’t play a complete game but we came out of the locker room at halftime and went to work. We went much tougher tonight,” Taylor said.
Drew Faulhaber paced the Ponies with 12 points and Kaden Macha had points. Isaiah Grover chipped in with eight points and seven rebounds.
Jacobs added six points. Alex Bauer scored two and Shane Walden had one point as both controlled five rebounds.
“Drew played much more under control and had his best game of the year,” Taylor said. “Matt Jacobs was fantastic off the bench. If he can keep up the intensity, he can be a huge difference.”
Today’s home games against Columbus are canceled. Iola hosts Coffeyville Thursday.
