Pony golfers win tourney

PITTSBURG     — Picking up where they left off last year, Iola Middle School’s golfers captured a tournament title Monday.
In their first action of the 2011 season, the Ponies won the Pittsburg Community Middle School’s tournament at Four Oaks golf course. The Ponies combined for a 154 for the nine-hole tournament.
Coffeyville was second with a 173. Independence finished third at 178. Iola won the SEK  league trophy last year.
The six Iola golfers each earned a medal.
Shane Walden and Kaden Macha each shot a 35 with Walden winning a scorecard playoff for second place. Calvin Hugo of Independence posted a 33 for the tournament, taking first place.
Iola’s Matt Jacobs, Adam Peterson and Drake Dieker all carded 42s. Jacobs won the scorecard playoff for the seventh-place medal.
Peterson took eighth and Dieker was ninth. Claiming the 10th-place medal was Isaiah Grover with a 43.
Iola’s Taylor Sell placed third in the girls’ division. Sell shot a 57.
There was not a team competition in the girls’ division.
The Ponies host the IMS Invitational Wednesday at Cedarbrook Golf Course.
