Pony varsity teams get split versus Osawatomie in first games after break

OSAWATOMIE — After a week off for Thanksgiving, the Iola Middle School girls’ basketball team got back after it and traveled to take on Osawatomie on Monday. The Ponies only brought their seventh- and eighth-grade varsity teams and left with a win for their eighth graders.
The seventh-grade Ponies fell 29-11. Iola kept it competitive in the first quarter but still trailed 11-7. Osawatomie pulled away in the second quarter, scoring 10 straight to take a 21-7 lead into halftime. The Pony defense continued to struggle in the third quarter allowing the Trojans to score eight more points while Iola scored just three. The defense tightened in the final quarter with the Ponies scoring the only point of the quarter.
Aysha Houk had a team-high five points, five steals and three blocks while Cali Riley and Jadyn Kauffman had three points each. Kauffman also led the team in rebounds with six.
The eighth-graders followed that up with a big 32-11 win, improving on their 29-22 win over the Trojans just before the Thanksgiving break. 
Osawatomie outscored the Ponies in the first quarter 7-4 but a 9-0 second quarter gave Iola a 13-7 halftime lead. The Ponies continued to pull away in the third quarter outscoring Osawatomie 9-4. Iola finished strong on both ends of the court, scoring 10 unanswered points in the final quarter to put the Trojans away.
Josie Plumlee had a great game, scoring 14 points on 7 of 8 shooting. She also led the team in steals with seven.
Maci Miller had seven points. Jenna Curry had five, Ally Ellis had four and Chloe Sell had two. Miller led the team in rebounds with five and Curry had a team-high two blocks.
The Ponies will take on Burlington Thursday before heading back to Burlington two days later for a tournament.
