The 2016 version of the Iola Indians is built on a strong core of young Iola varsity players with All-League performers Derek Bycroft and Isaac Vink ready to provide consistent contributions in the upcoming season.
During the season-opener on Wednesday night a trio of non-Mustangs look likely to play huge roles for the American Legion ball club.
In game one’s 10-0 victory over Osawatomie, Humboldt standouts Lance Daniels and Daylon Splane each had two hits and combined to drive in four runs.
Iola coach Rick Vink said he is excited to have each on the team, adding they each fill big needs in the Indians lineup.
“It would be great to be called ‘Allen County High School’ and have those kids all the time,” Vink said.
Daniels gives the team a left-handed option in the lineup.
“Lance has developed more in the last two years than anyone I have seen,” Vink said.
Before the addition of Daniels, the Indians had only one left-handed option on the team with Mustang varsity catcher Coleson Wiggin.
Daniels also gives the Indians a very good glove at first base.
After Splane’s stellar performance at the plate and at shortstop in game one, Vink gave the Cub the start on the mound in game two.
“Daylon is a guy I’ve coach in the past,” Vink said. “He is solid wherever you put him.”
Splane didn’t disappoint.
He threw 4 3/3 innings and allowed only one earned run on seven hits.
“Daylon was Humboldt’s No. 2 or 3 all year,” Vink said. “When he is throwing strikes, he is tough to hit.”
The Indians’ offense kept the momentum they built from game one going in the nightcap. They rolled to a 10-2 victory over the overmatched Raiders.
Marmaton Valley’s Justice Pugh is also a player the Indian coaching staff has high hopes for. He gives the team a big speed boost.
“Justice is a kid, who defensively and speed-wise is great,” Vink said. “His bat is coming along, so we are excited to have him on board.”
