Allen Community College men’s basketball coach Andy Shaw was looking for his team to get its first signature win in conference play before the stretch-run of the season gets too far along. That statement victory came on Wednesday in a 74-60 home victory over traditional Jayhawk Conference powerhouse Coffeyville Community College.
“Everybody we had beaten  was below us in the standings,” Shaw said of his 9-9 squad. “We had to jump and show that we could beat someone above us in the standings.”
Defense led the way in the victory. The Ravens shot only 38 percent from the field and 28 percent from beyond the arc.
“I told our guys that we have to defend and rebound to win this game,” Shaw said. “We did what we were supposed to be doing all year…. We got down and guarded.”
The Red Devil offense also was on point, as they were able to get to the rim early and often, setting up their outside shooting. The Red Devils shot 44 percent from three-point land.
DaRon Mims led the Red Devil attack with 19 points.
“He is a sophomore so he understands the significance of playing Coffeyville,” Shaw said.
E.J. Garnes had a good game with nine points, seven assists and five rebounds.
“He ran the show,” Shaw said. “He was instrumental in the victory.”
Long-range specialists Quentin Blaue and Shon Sanders also finished in double figures with 12 and 10 respectively.

WOMEN
The Red Devil women also fought tough with Coffeyville and went back and forth for much of the game until Coffeyville opened the game up late and took an 81-62 win.
Freshmen Katelyn Swanson, Kamri Summons and Chelsey Trautoff each scored 10 to lead the Red Devils.
