EL DORADO — The Red Devil women’s basketball team has experienced some offensive growing pains throughout the early going this season, but Monday’s 73-37 loss on the road against Butler Community College exposed their offensive flaws.
“We’ve been playing really well up until this point, but we just no-showed,” Red Devil coach Todd Buchanan said. “We might as well have just stayed on Thanksgiving break.”
Red Devil freshman Chelsey Trautloff’s buzzer-beating three pointer allowed the Red Devils to avoid being doubled-up in the contest, but by that point the lesson had already sank in for Allen. Despite a strong start to the conference season with a 3-1 record, the Red Devils still have some growing to do to reach the level of the elite teams in the Jayhawk Conference.
“I don’t think we were mentally prepared to play,” Buchanan said. “I don’t know if we thought we were still on break or what the reason was. We built a mountain out of a molehill.”
The Red Devils hung tight with Butler in the first quarter, with the Grizzlies building an 18-13 lead.
The Grizzlies built the lead to 36-22 at the intermission, before they opened the game up completely in the third quarter with a 15-4 third quarter.
“I think they really exposed our youth,” Buchanan said. “We started to fold the tent and that really made me angry.”
Allen was led in scoring by Sequerah Alleyne with nine points. Kamri Summons added eight points and Trautloff finished with three. Summons also led the team with seven rebounds despite playing point guard.
“When Kam leads you in rebounding, there isn’t much else to say,” Buchanan said of his forwards’ performances. “I’m extremely, extremely disappointed.”
Red Devil guards Katelyn Swanson and Tamera Shaver with five points each and Kendra Houston had three.
Butler’s Kendriana Washington led her team with 17 points and 11 rebounds. Raven Prince also had 15 points.

The Red Devils return home on Wednesday when they will face off with Barton Community College. Buchanan says it is on his team to rebound from Monday’s ugly loss.
“Nobody is going to feel sorry for us and nobody can fix it other than ourselves,” Buchanan said. “After a good butt-kicking, you either bounce back or you don’t.”
