Three-pointers were deadly against Allen Community College’s women’s basketball team Wednesday night.
Highland’s Scotties shot their way to a 91-68 win over Allen’s Red Devils.
“They shot the ball really well,” coach Katie Mahoney said. “Between them shooting very well and us having 26 turnovers, we can’t expect to come out on top.”
Highland didn’t shoot the ball well, they put on a clinic. The Scotties shot 50 percent for the game, but that’s not the impressive stat.
They made 16 of 34 3-pointers, 47 percent. Those 16 3-pointers accounted for 48 points.
The game started off well enough for the Red Devils, but their opponents pulled ahead. With 15 minutes left in the first half, Haley Wilson buried a 3-pointer for Allen. The Red Devils had a 10-9 lead.
With 10:45 left in the first, Daria Evans hit 2-2 free throws pulling ACC up to a three-point lead at 17-14.
Highland’s Ashleigh Jones nailed a 3-pointer to give the Scotties a 22-21 lead with 8:40 left. Allen never earned the lead back. At halftime, Allen trailed 46 -34.
In the second half, ACC tired to play catch-up. For two consecutive possessions, Allen made 3-pointers — one from Ashley Washington, the other from Erika Essman.
Highland still led 69-48 with 10:35 left. Allen didn’t have enough to make a full comeback. However, they did make 6 of 15 3-pointers in the second half. Washington, Essman and Daniela Azubell each made two.
Highland outdid the Red Devils’ 3-point shooting, making 7-15 in the second half. The Scotties beat the Red Devils in just about every facet.
Much of the 26 turnovers Mahoney mentioned had to do with Highland using a pressure defense. It was expected.
“They were athletic and quick,” Mahoney said. “We knew that they were going to press the ball. We just didn’t execute.”
This is the Red Devils’ sixth straight loss over a three-week period.
“We seem to keep making the same mistakes every single game. Turnovers, rebounding and defense,” Mahoney said. “When we don’t cover shooters and have turnovers, that’s what we get. We played well enough offensively, when we did run our offense to win the game. But, we’ve got to take care of those areas. Until we do, we’ll have the same result.”
Essman and Washington each scored 13 points. Wilson and Ashley Sally finished the night with 10 apiece.
ACC (5-19) travels to Independence Saturday.
