Red Devils down Pirates in 15 innings

Michael Samuel had the 12th hit of the game for Allen County Community College’s Red Devils: a one-out double in the bottom of the 15th inning.
The Red Devils were locked in a 5-5 tie with visiting Independence Community College’s Pirates. It was the first of two Jayhawk Eastern Division games at Red Devil Field.
Allen County’s hitters did nothing else to win the game. Samuel went to third base on a passed ball then a wild pitch by the Pirates’ Jesse Kinzey allowed Samuel to score the winning run.
The Red Devils would score eight runs in the second inning of the second game. They went on to win 9-4 and sweep a Jayhawk East doubleheader, a rarity for the ACCC team this season.
Aaron Burke pitched nine innings in relief and got the win in the opener. He didn’t give up a run on seven hits, two walks, one hit batter and he struck out four.
Starter Matt Stalcup went 52⁄3 innings, surrendering five runs on five hits, one walk and one hit batter. He struck out six. John Michael Moore pitched one-third of an inning.
Samuel also had a single in the game. Brayden Brumley, Curtiss Bunch, Michael Schell and Marcus Peavler each had two singles.
Connor McCrite was 4-for-7 with a double and three singles. He also had three stolen bases. Ryan Fike singled.
Brumley hit a leadoff home run in the second game. Then Allen County did the damage in the second inning after two were out.
Allen County had three doubles in the inning. Brumley drove in one run then Fike and Brad Alberts each had two-run doubles. Peavler singled in a run then scored on a wild pitch. Bunch hit a solo home run.
Mark Thompson got the pitching win, going five innings. He gave up four runs on six hits and two walks and struck out four. Ben Pearson walked on and struck out two in one inning  of work. Kyle Grana had one inning of work and struck out two.
Brumley hit a single, a double and a home run. Other hits were a single each by Bunch and Miles Sanderson.
Allen County led 9-0 after two innings. Independence scored a run in the fourth and three more in the fifth.
Allen County improved to 14-14 in conference and 20-18 overall. Independence has lost eight games in row and dropped to 13-21 and 19-27.
Allen County hosts Fort Scott Thursday and Kansas City, Kan., Sunday.
