The Red Devil baseball team split the first half of their second conference series at Highland Community College on Thursday.

Allen County won the first game 11-6 and lost the second 8-6. The Red Devils move to 13-3 overall and 5-1 in league play.

In the first game, the Red Devils went up 4-1 after the first inning before scoring six in the top of the second to take a 10-1 lead.

The Scotties fought back, scoring three in the bottom of the third and two in the bottom of the fourth while Allen County scored a run in the top of the fourth to move their lead to 11-6. The Red Devils were able to hold Highland off for the final three innings to get the win.

Sophomore first baseman Sky-Lar Culver drove in three runs on two hits including a home run. Freshman left fielder Justus Burke and freshman catcher Colton Flaherty both scored two runs on a hit each and freshman shortstop Baxter Mays scored a run on two hits including a solo home run.

Starter Nate Postlethwait (2-0) earned his second win of the season, allowing six runs (four earned) on seven hits and a walk. Postlethwait also recorded eight strikeouts.

The second game started rough with Highland jumping out to a 5-1 lead after the first two innings. The Red Devils rebounded though, scoring two innings in both the fourth and fifth innings to tie the game up at five.

A Scottie run in the bottom of the sixth gave Highland the advantage but two innings later, the Red Devils tied it up again at six in the top of the eighth. Highland took the lead again in the bottom of the eighth with two runs.

Allen County had a final shot to tie it up or take the lead but couldn’t get anything across in the top of the ninth.

Culver once again was the offensive leader, driving home three runs on three hits, two of them being home runs, and forcing one walk. Burke drove in a run on two hits, Flaherty didn’t have a hit but was able to bring home one run and sophomore designated hitter Matt Phipps drove home one run on two hits and a walk.

Freshman reliever Jacob Potter (1-1) earned his first loss of the season allowing three runs (one earned) on two hits and two walks in the final four innings. Potter recorded six strikeouts.
