FORT SCOTT — Allen County Community College’s Red Devil baseball team is having a tough time getting into a winning mode in 2011.
The Red Devils went 1-3 over the weekend in Jayhawk Eastern Division play at Fort Scott Community College. After losing two on Saturday, 9-4 and 14-4 to their hosts, the Greyhounds, the Red Devils rallied to win 11-9 then lost again 16-6 in Sunday’s doubleheader.
The Red Devils are 2-6 in conference play and 4-10 overall. They host Evangel College junior varsity Thursday in non-conference play. The first game starts at 3 p.m. at Red Devil Field.
Allen County’s lone win over the weekend, came on Sunday. The Red Devils scored six runs in the third inning to take a 6-1 lead.
They scored single runs in the fourth and the sixth. Bryce Williams hit a solo home run in the sixth.
Allen County was up 8-1 when starter Dylan Bow and reliever Brad Alberts both ran into trouble on the mound. The damage was eight runs by Fort Scott in the bottom of the sixth inning.
Down 9-8, the Red Devils rallied to score three runs in the seventh. Nathan Russell drew a leadoff walk then with one out, Brayden Brumley singled and Williams walked. Curtiss Bunch singled before Nick Fountain hit a two-run base hit.
Zak Mickens worked a one-hit, scoreless inning to get the pitching victory. Fountain had three singles and three RBIs. Bunch, Brumley, Alberts and Michael Schell each had two singles.
The Greyhounds blasted the Red devils 16-6 in the second game, a nine-inning game that only went eight. Brandon Spear took the loss, going 3 2/3 innings and allowing 10 runs on 10 hits and two walks with three strikeouts. Tanner Wittman, Brian Bartlett and Travis Stafford pitched for ACCC also.
Alberts was 3-for-4 with two doubles and a single. Schell had a two-run home run in the seventh inning. Bunch had a single and a double.
Williams doubled. Hitting a single each were Brumley, Tevin Kendall Miles Sanderson and Kaleb Hoffman.
Allen County led Fort Scott 4-3 after five innings of the first game on Saturday. Fort Scott scored six runs in the sixth to win 9-4.
Cody Wren was the losing pitcher for ACCC as he went 5 1/3 innings, giving up eight runs on 10 hits and had three strikeouts. Mickens worked two-thirds of an inning and gave up one run on three hits.
Brian Bartlett had a single and a double for ACCC. Schell hit two singles and Fountain doubled. Alberts, Williams and Brumley had a single each.
The Greyhounds scored nine runs in the second inning of the second game Saturday. They led 12-0. Allen County pushed across four runs in the fourth.
Fountain, Kaleb Clark and Eric Seymour took turns on the mound for ACCC. Allen County allowed 12 hits and issued six walks in the game.
Schell had two base hits. Bunc, Fountain and Kendall each had a double. WIlliams and Hoffman had a single apiece.
