Kansas City, Kan., Community College’s Blue Devils just peppered their host, Allen County Community College’s Red Devils Monday.
Utilizing the strong, gusting wind, Kansas City found places to drop in single after single in back-to-back victories. Kansas City had 20 base hits and five doubles against Allen County pitching in winning 9-6 in seven innings and 9-3 in nine innings.
The Blue Devils swept the Jayhawk Eastern Division four-game series. Allen County is 2-10 in Jayhawk East play and 6-14 overall.
Allen County is 1-5 on its home field in conference play as it and Kansas City played at Emporia State for Sunday’s doubleheader.
The Red Devils are on the road today in Salina against Brown Mackie in non-conference action. They go to Seminole, Okla., Thursday before heading to Johnson County for a four-game weekend series.
Allen County trailed 5-4 after five innings in the opener Monday. Nick Fountain hit his fifth home run, a solo shot over the center field fence, in the second inning. That made it 2-1.
Kansas City had scored twice in the top half of the inning, then had a three-run fourth. Bryce Williams led off ACCC’s fourth with a solo home run to center field.
In the fifth, Brad Alberts singled and Kyle Johnston reached on an error. With one out, Riley Price smashed a two-run base hit up the middle. Allen County was down by one run.
The Blue Devils cashed in on four hits and an ACCC error for four runs in the sixth. The Red Devils mounted a rally in the bottom of the inning but got only two runs on three hits, stranding two on base.
That was it. Cody Wren went the distance on the mound for the Red Devils, giving up 11 hits, walking one, hitting two batters and striking out five.
Fountain added a single to his home run. Travis Stafford had a double. Williams, Curtiss Bunch, Alberts and Price each had a base hit.
Kansas City had single runs in the first, third, sixth, seventh and eighth innings of the second game. The Blue Devils were up 2-0 when Albert hit his first home run of the season, a solo shot to lead off the fifth.
The Red Devils used a double by Williams, a two-out error, a single by Michael Schell and an errant throw to score twice in the sixth. It was 3-3.
Kansas City got the lead back in the seventh by one and an insurance run in the eighth. The Blue Devils plated four runs in the top of the ninth.
Alberts had a single along with the home run. Williams had a single to go with his double. Schell had two singles. Brayden Brumley and Nathan Russell each had a single.
Alberts started the game on the mound.
Patrick Garner came on in relief in the first and went 51⁄2 innings, taking the loss. Tanner Wittman and Zak Mickens also pitched for ACCC.
