SALINA — Allen County Community College’s Red Devil softball team has only one loss in 10 Region VI, Division II softball games this season.
The Red Devils moved to 9-1 in the regional standings with a sweep of a doubleheader at Brown Mackie Friday. Allen County won 3-0 and 19-7 .
Allen County was to have played at Cloud County Saturday but was rained out.
Next up for Allen County (17-11) is a Jayhawk Eastern Division doubleheader at Fort Scott Tuesday. The Red Devils are 7-1 in Jayhawk East play.
The first game Friday with Brown Mackie was tight. There was no score until the fifth inning.
Allen County’s Brandie Hutcheson was hit by a pitch, stole second and reached third on a passed ball to start the fifth. With two gone, Kylie Taylor doubled home the run.
In the sixth, Megan Dillow doubled and Lenzie Boring hit a two-run home run to put ACCC up 3-0.
Boring had held Brown Mackie to one hit through six full innings. With two out in the seventh, Boring issued back-to-back walks but got a ground ball out to close the game. Boring recorded 16 strikeouts.
Boring also had a single to go with her home run. Jenna Sigg had a double as the other hit of the game.
The second game was a bit wild. Both teams scored six runs in the first inning.
Allen County had three hits. Callie Umholtz drove in a run with a single and Kristina Popejoy had a two-run double.
The Red Devils produced two runs in the second on one hit, an error and a wild pitch. Allen County’s error in the second allowed Brown Mackie to score a run.
Up 8-7, the Red Devils scored 11 runs in the sixth inning. They had seven of their 12 hits in the inning and Brown Mackie had three errors in the inning.
Highlighting the inning was a two-run single by Amy Carr. Then Sigg and Shawna Blakesley delivered two-run home runs.
Amy McAfee got the pitching win in relief of starter Brianne Campbell. McAfee and the Red Devils retired Brown Mackie 1-2-3 in the bottom of the sixth to end the game.
McAfee pitched 5 1/3 innings, allowing one run on no hits and two walks. She struck out four. Campbell went two-thirds of an inning, giving up six runs on eight hits and had two strikeouts.
Dillow was 3-for-4 at the plate with three singles. Popejoy had a double and a single and Carr had two singles. Hitting a single each were Autumn Lamle, Umholtz and Taylor.
