No Iola High football player has ever led the Southeast Kansas League in scoring. In their final season in the SEK and with just one win in league action, the Mustangs had an SEK scoring champion in 2011.
Senior running back Jerrik Sigg is the SEK football scoring champion and was selected to the 2011 All-SEK first-team football squad. Sigg is one of four IHS football players earning league recognition from league coaches.
SEK coaches named the 2011 All-SEK football and volleyball teams a week ago. The Iola High Fillies had one volleyball player selected. Iola High cross country runners reeled in SEK honors at the league meet in October on their home course.
Sigg, who is a two-time all-league first-team selection, was joined by Mustang teammates Clint Heffern, Zach Crawford and Mason Coons. Heffern was selected to the second team while Crawford and Coons received honorable mention.
The SEK football selections are based on where a school finishes in the standings. Players are not selected by position. The Mustangs went 1-7 in SEK play and finished 2-7 overall.
Kendra Taiclet, Iola High’s senior outside hitter, was named to the All-SEK volleyball first team. She received second-team honors as a junior. Taiclet was the only Iola volleyball player to earn league honors the last two years in the SEK.
Taiclet led the Fillies with 301 kills on 512 net attacks. She had 61 solo blocks and 22 assisted blocks at the net, leading the team in both categories.
Taiclet was second in defensive digs with 78. She was the Fillies’ top server at 92 percent with 17 ace serves and was an 84 percent passer.
The Fillies were 1-7 in SEK matches and 7-26 overall.
Sigg, who is 6-1 and 172 pounds, scored an SEK-leading 170 points this season, which is the sixth most in SEK history. His 26 touchdowns are fourth most in league history and Sigg is just one of 15 players who have scored 20 or more touchdowns in a season.
Sigg broke school rushing records this season for single season and single game. In the final game of the season against Prairie View, Sigg rushed for 353 yards on 53 carries, which is also a school record, for the single-game record.
For the 2011 season, Sigg finished with 1,323 yards on 220 carries. The old mark was 1,286 by Webb Mechling in 1992. Both runners got their yardage in nine games. The former single-game high mark was Tyler Ringwald’s 2005 performance of 291 yards on 14 carries.
Sigg owns three of the top four single-game performances in IHS history, as known, all coming this season. He climbed to third on the career rushing list with over 1,700 yards.
Sigg also caught 38 passes for 567 yards this season. He scored seven two-point conversions. Sigg was 9 of 20 for 175 yards passing with one interception and one touchdown pass.
Heffern, a 5-10 and 165-pound senior receiver, made 35 receptions for 295 yards.
Crawford, who played on the defensive line and as linebacker for the Mustangs, racked up 42 solo tackles and 41 assisted tackles. The 5-9, 171-pound senior forced three fumbles and recovered two fumbles.
Junior Mason Coons, 6-1 and 176 pounds, was Iola’s quarterback. Coons threw for 1,088 yards this season, completing 95 of 179 attempts. He had seven touchdown passes and threw nine interceptions.
Iola hosted the 2011 SEK Cross Country Meet in October. The Mustangs had four boys earn league honors and two girls claim honors. The top 10 finishers claimed all-SEK League honors, while those who  placed 11th through 20th were honorable mention.
Two-time defending SEK champion Roman Yocham, Iola senior, earned the fourth-place medal. Yocham ran the race on his home course in 17 minutes, 37 seconds leading the Mustangs to a third-place finish.
Sophomores Trent Latta and Jeremy Spears garnered All-SEK honors along with Yocham. Latta finished sixth in 17:50 and Spears was ninth in 18:28. Tyler Powelson, another sophomore, ended 13th in 18:41 for honorable mention.
Iola freshman Jo Lohman ran her best time by almost one minute in leading the Fillies. Lohman finished 19th in 18:21 and senior Sydney Owens was 20th in 18:37. Both earned SEK honorable mention. The Fillies were fifth as a team in the meet.
