TOPEKA — SEK Invaders, a 12-and-under travel softball team, finished second in last weekend’s The Capital City State Invitational.

The Invaders have players from Iola, Humboldt and Chanute. The team had to work its way through the losers bracket in the 12-and-under Class C tournament.

The SEK Invaders lost to Topeka Fury 6-5 in the opener. The team won three straight to reach the championship game.

The Invaders faced Topeka Fury again for the title. The Fury beat SEK Invaders 13-2.

“By the time we reached the championship game, the girls had been playing ball for almost six hours,” said Kevin Hall, one of team’s coach.

“It was a good tournament for the girls. By losing the first game it forced the girls to fight their way through the losers bracket.”

SEK Invaders rolled to a 14-0 win over Topeka Jr Hot Shots then shut out Topeka Diamond Girls 15-0. The Invaders downed previously undefeated Emporia Energy 14-1 to move into the championship game.

Hall said the team had  good pitching and strong defense throughout the tournament. He said the team had a ways to go but “they are a very hard working group of young lades and show progress every game.”

Members of the team are Scout Rush, Emma Weseloh, Jadyn Sigg, Colbi Riley, Regan Smith, Hanna Bruce, Ashley Hall, Rylan Wilhite,  Madison Thompson, Katie Robinson, Maggie Johnson, Denise Johnson and Kasynda Eubanks. Coaching with Hall are Travis Weseloh and Keith Gurwell and Chuck Smith is the team manager.

The SEK Invaders are playing in a tournament in Chanute this weekend.
